In part 1, he says "IF you didn't care ..." the important part is the if, as that implies that they do in fact care for each other, which is proven in part 2. part 1 is a hypothetical statement, "if we didn't care for each other, we'd live meaningless lives," whereas part 2 is the true statement that closes the album, "but we both know we care for each other so it's cool." but that's just my interpretation.

Mar 5, 2010 - actually, that solo was done for the 8-track release of animals, because Pigs on the wing one and two (the smallest pink floyd songs ever, by far) were too small to be individual tracks. Thus, they put them together and added the solo. Please make sure you know what you are talking about before you start bitching and whining.
